From the academic session starting this July, all students of classes IX to XII inUttar Pradesh will have to study yoga as a mandatory subject. These students will also have to compulsorily take a 20 marks examination in the subject. This decision taken by the Yogi Adityanath government will affect close to 30 million students studying in 50,000 different schools in the state.
The responsibility of preparing the curriculum for the subject of yoga and training teachers has been bestowed upon popular yog guru Baba Ramdev’s Patanjali Yogpeeth. A fact that deserves a special mention here is that Patanjali Yogpeeth will not be charging a single rupee as fee from the Uttar Pradesh government or the schools to accomplish the task.
So far, students were being taught only two chapters on yoga in Class X and XII in the subject of physical education. This is the first time yoga will be introduced as a full-fledged subject.
The Board has formed a committee of seven persons, including four from Patanjali Yogpeeth, to take care of the preparation of the curriculum and the training of teachers. For now, there will be no new recruitment of yoga teachers. The presently employed teachers will be trained in yoga by Patanjali experts and will be entrusted with the responsibility of passing on the knowledge to pupils.
An official announcement on the matter will be made during the meeting of Uttar Pradesh Board on April 26 in Allahabad. The Head of Ministry of Secondary Education and Dinesh Sharma, the Deputy Chief Minister of State, are expected to be present at the meeting.
