Remember Rakhee Gulzar, the beautiful green-eyed actress who ruled the silver screen in the 70s? You might remember her from the epic love story ‘Kabhi Kabhi’, where she worked opposite Amitabh Bachchan, or ‘Karan Arjun’, where she was seen in the powerful role of the mother. Sharing her birthday with the Indian Independence Day, Rakhee Gulzar has been a gift to the Indian Cinema – after all, there are seldom actresses who show the power to choose character-driven roles over star-studded roles at the peak of their careers.

Regarded as one of the finest actresses of all time in Indian Cinema, Rakhee Gulzar had been unlike any other actress of her time. She was pretty, she was charming and, above all, acting flawlessly was her power. But, unlike most other actresses of her time, she would play characters that might have endangered her image as a “heroine”. For example, she played the role of Amitabh Bachchan’s girlfriend, his wife, his secretary and even his mother! In fact, she has done 11 films with Amitabh Bachchan and all of them were roaring successes at the box office. She acted with all the noted names in Bollywood back in those days yet maintained an extremely humble profile throughout. And not just in Bollywood, her contribution to the Bengali film industry, especially the parallel Bengali films, has been immense.

It was in May 1973 that Rakhee, as she has been fondly known, went on to marry the noted poet, filmmaker, and lyricist, Gulzar. Although she had never been open about her personal life, it is known that the couple separated shortly after the birth of their only daughter Meghna Gulzar. However, they were never divorced.

This separation marked what is known as the second innings of her film career.

Over this period of time, she worked in various important films – from ‘Kabhi Kabhi’, ‘Basera’ (1981) and ‘Shakti’ (1982) to ‘Paroma’ (1984), ‘Baazigar’ (1993) and ‘Shubho Mahurat’ (2003).

In fact, it won’t be wrong to term this period as Rakhee’s golden time as an actress.

After 2003, she absolutely vanished from the limelight, living a rather solitary life at her farmhouse in Panvel. Even Bollywood forgot her existence completely until very recently when she was captured playing Holi with Gulzar and her family.

Later on, she was also spotted at an event with Saira Banu.
