Time has changed but the filth of sexism still exists in our society. No matter how much the women have struggled for their rights and progressed, but this patriarchal world still treats them as the weaker sex. For instance, in our film industry actresses are self-assumed to be sexually available.
Just check their social profiles, the kind of comments they receive from people are utterly shameful. Bashing every damn troll on social media, Tamil actress, Varalaxmi Sarathkumar, recently has done a much-needed thing.
Many people have asked Varalaxmi, “You knew the film industry was like this when you joined. Why complain now?” and finally she has answered this question. In a powerful note, Varalaxmi exposed a famous producer, who asked her for sexual favors and pretended that it’s normal in the industry.
This is what she wrote:
I was in a meeting with the programming head of a TV channel for half an hour, at the end of which he said, ‘So…when can we meet outside?’ I asked him, ‘Regarding some other work?’ He replied (with a smug smile, as is the norm) ‘No, for other things.’ I hid my shock and anger and told him, ‘Please leave’. He said, ‘So — that’s all?’ and smiled and walked away.
A common reaction from people, both in the industry and outside when they hear things like this is to say, ‘film industry is like this. You knew so when you joined. Why complain now or act supposed?’ My response is this, ‘I didn’t come to the industry to be treated like a piece of meat or to follow the standards of exploitation of women already practised. I love acting. It’s my profession of choice. I work hard and i’m good at my work. I certainly do not want to choose either option of ‘put up with or quit’.
I certainly do not want to choose either option of ‘Put up with it or quit’. As a woman, I see only one choice. Resist and speak out. The important choices have to be presented to the men, ‘Either stop disrespecting women or GET OUT’.
