Powered by passionate performances, soul-stirring music and, most importantly, an intense love story at its core, Aashiqui is one of the most loved film franchises that we have seen in Bollywood. The first part of the series hit screens way back in 1990 and set new benchmarks for romantic movies in India. Aashiqui 2, the second installment, released in 2013 and turned out to be a bigger blockbuster than its predecessor. After the tremendous success of Aashiqui 2, the makers had said that they would return with Aashiqui 3 soon.

Talks about Aashiqui 3, the third installment of the blockbuster romantic movie series, have been floating around in media and the industry circle for almost 4 years now. However, there has been no progress on it to date.

Recently, when we caught up with T-Series head honcho Bhushan Kumar, who co-produced Aashiqui 2 along with Vishesh Films, and asked if plans for Aashiqui 3 are still on, he said:

“Yeah. Now it is the right time we are planning to do Aashiqui 3. Mostly we will start next year. We will definitely bring Aashiqui 3 in 2020.”

When it comes to the Aashiqui franchise, the makers have always gone for a fresh pairing. While Aashiqui starred debutants, Rahul Roy and Anu Aggarwal, Aashiqui 2 had newcomers Aditya Roy Kapur and Shraddha Kapoor at the center stage.

When we asked the producer if he has decided anything on the star cast of the movie, he said he would follow the tradition and cast a fresh pair.

“At the moment, we are trying to lock the story. As far as the cast is concerned, we are just thinking that we should follow the same tradition which we followed with Aashiqui (1990) and Aashiqui 2 (2013): to work with fresh faces or with faces who aren’t that known.”

Kumar goes on to add that when he signed Aditya Roy Kapur and Shraddha Kapoor for Aashiqui 2, they were not established actors. It was with his film that both the actors achieved success in Bollywood.

“When we roped in Aditya Roy Kapur and Shraddha Kapoor, they were also fresh. Their last films hadn’t done well. Aashiqui 2 gave them that success. So, just to take that tradition forward – like we do with our music company also where we give a chance to fresh talent – we will cast fresh faces in Aashiqui 3. Bhatt Saab and Mukesh Ji are also thinking about it.”

Earlier, there were reports that Alia Bhatt and her then rumored boyfriend Sidharth Malhotra might topline Aashiqui 3. When we asked Bhushan Kumar about the same, this is what he had to say:

“Alia has already achieved so much in her career, so we should give a chance to newcomers who can go to the level of Alia Bhatt.”

Apart from Aashiqui 3, a remake of T-Series’ blockbuster movie Dil Hai Ki Manta Nahin (1991), starring Aamir Khan and Pooja Bhatt, was also a hot topic of discussion till a couple of years ago. Upon being asked if T-Series is indeed planning a remake of the movie, Bhushan said:

“Our first target is to make Aashiqui 3. Dil Hai Ke Manta Nahin remake we definitely want to make. It’s a great film. The only problem with that film is that apart from Aamir Khan, who else you will cast? So, that’s why we are not in any rush.”

Do you think when  Aashiqui 3 finally releases it will have the same effect as the other two movies?
