‘Dangal’ is undoubtedly the most significant film of 2016. Probably, this is the first time when other characters in the movie were at par with Aamir. One of the most-talked about characters of the film is Geeta’s coach, played by Girish Kulkarni. His mean, envious, and corrupt image made us question the righteousness of our coaches.
P. R. Sondhi, Geeta’s coach, was unhappy with the way he was projected on-screen, especially the notorious scene where he locked Mahavir in a room. Speaking about the scene, he clarified his relations with the Phogat family,
“Mahavirji is an old friend of mine. I have a very close relation with the Phogat family. I have not seen the film yet, but the facts told to me by my students highlight things that I didn’t do. Just to spice things up you can’t defame me. I know the name isn’t the same, but it’s quite evident that I am the person being referred to here,”
He pointed out an interesting thing about the infamous scene:
“If a national coach had locked someone then why nobody reported the incident? If you ask Geeta, I am sure you deny the incident?”
Seeing the controversy doing rounds and heated debates, Aamir decided to end it and stated the fictional truth:
“No, he was not actually locked up in the room. Like in every biopic, a little fiction is added, but the essence of their story is kept intact. There may be a few incidents here and there which may not have happened exactly that way but in essence, it is their story.”
However, real or unreal, the film didn’t fail to inspire us. Right, guys?
