A former Indian Idol contestant, Suraj, was arrested after he robbed a man at gunpoint on October 21. He had 24 criminal cases registered against him.

Suraj, a resident of Uttam Nagar, New Delhi, had participated in the Indian Idol show in 2008 and had cleared the audition round. Later, he failed to reach the Gala round.

Last week, Suraj and three accomplices robbed a man and used pepper spray on him and fled off with his gold chain and leather bag.

This is not the first time he had committed thefts. According to DCP MN Tiwari, he has been arrested before, too. The Police officer said,

In 2014, he was arrested in a case of theft lodged at the Janakpuri police station. A number of mobile phones were recovered from him. He was again arrested in June this year in a robbery case registered at the Tilak Nagar police station.

When Suraj was questioned by the Police, he told police that he needed money to live a grand lifestyle. The Police officer said,

He had multiple girlfriends and used to take them to five-star hotels. But the money started to run out. He had tried to earn money by making YouTube videos, but the revenues from advertisements were not enough to sustain him. He said he became addicted to living a good life and took to crime to earn a quick buck.

Suraj has been held for theft of Rs. 90 lakh
