A 18 year-old Chennai boy, Sai Kiran P, won the second prize at the Nasa Ames Space Settlement Contest for proposing an insightful idea of connecting Earth to the Moon through elevators.

He started working on this project in 2013 when he was living in Singapore. He wrote its thesis in March last year after he moved to Chennai. His proposal is titled, ‘Connecting Moon, Earth and Space’ and ‘HUMEIU Space Habitats’.

The contest received entries from students up to 12th grade for designing proposed human settlements on the Moon.

His thesis also included ideas for setting up recreation, entertainment, governance, and agriculture on the Moon.

It is a fact that sending humans to the moon via rockets is not economically viable. Hence, Sai believes that faultless elevators could do the job for us. He even calculated the height of the elevators, which is around 40,000 Kms. He added that design could be lunar-based or earth-based elevators, whichever is viable.

The purpose of Sai’s project is to create a possibility that humans can live on the Moon. He stated to Deccan Chronicle,

The first segment of the project is about creating elevators that could transport humans and cargo to the Moon so that humans can form their settlements there. The most important aspect was that of gravity as, without gravity, humans won’t be able to settle there.

You never know, this idea might become a reality someday, after all, ideas are roots of creation.
