Every day, we hear stories of strong-willed women who beat their odds for survival. In India, a country where males are considered a superior sex, each woman has to stand up for herself and prove her mettle. And this is what Gouri S Naik did.
Gouri is a 51-year-old woman, who single-handedly dug a 60 foot well in just three months. And now, that well serves as a constant source to get water.
Gouri lives Uttara Kannada district, Sirsi, and is proudly known as ‘Lady Bhagiratha’.
Gouri needed a constant water supply to feed her coconut and areca plants, but she did not have enough money to build a well. Hence, without any external help, she started digging, and after months of aching efforts, she succeeded in getting water.
Every day, she would dig for six hours, delving four feet into the ground. It is only during the last leg of digging, three other women helped her to lift out the dirt.
Though she is a member of Dharmastala rural development scheme, but nobody was unaware Gouri’s hardships. The Scheme officer told TOI,
When Gouri came to the meeting, she would complain about body ache. But we did not know about her work in digging a well. It was only when we visited her home that we found out what she was doing.
