Although we are quite happy appreciating our very own masala Bollywood films, somehow we cannot help ourselves from getting swayed away by Hollywood films. We love the films for their stories, for the grand and realistic sets, the costumes—yes, the costumes, which are enough to give life and dignity to any character (you can also call the costumes the best feature of Hollywood films)! In this list, let’s have a look at some of the best dressed gangsters in Hollywood films—
8. Johnny Clay
Portrayed onscreen by Sterling Hayden, Johnny Clay is a veteran gangster planning one last criminal encounter before settling down with his beloved, in the Stanley Kubrick film, The Killing (1956). Although the film fared poorly at the box office, it was well appreciated by the critics. And, old Mr. Johnny Clay, in his archaic black suits was surely a winner—enough to sway ladies at one show!
Classic Hollywood films are always a delight to watch—it also gives us some great and well-dressed characters ever. Caesar Enrico Bandello, a small time criminal turned gangster in the film Little Caesar, is one such example. Rico (played by Edward G. Robinson) looked quite captive in his dark suits with the light colored waist coats. The look was finished with a tilted top cap a la, the quintessential gangster films. The film was also nominated in a distinguished category of the 4th Academy Awards.
6. Rocky Sullivan
Yet another classic gangster in the list, Rocky Sullivan, portrayed by James Cagney in the 1938 blockbuster Angels with Dirty Faces, is an epitome of the handsome and passionate gangster, which we all dream of! In well-fitted dark suits, side parted, well-brushed hair combined with an equally intense look, Rocky Sullivan was an instant hit among the female viewers, once the film was released.
5. Tom Powers
Another James Cagney starred hit, The Public Enemy is a pre-code prime crime film and of course, a huge blockbuster. The film portrays a young man’s foray into the criminal underworld of America. Mostly dressed in the quintessential black suits and wavy classic-Hollywood hair, Tom Powers is also seen, in few scenes, in casual shirts and night suits which are equally stylish nonetheless! Wonder how these people get to look so stylish even in night suits!
4. Sam “Ace” Rothstein
Portrayed by the dashing Robert de Niro, Ace is one of the best mafias portrayed on the silver screen. The film is a classic tale about the rise and fall of the mafia boss, Ace. In its approach it’s quite similar to any Shakespearean tragedy, which invariably traces the rise and fall of the tragic hero. However, it is the tall Niro, with his neatly tailored casual suits with light colored shirts and neatly parted hair who steals the show throughout! It’s definitely a much watch for all de Niro fans!
3. Bonnie Parker
Till now, we were all talking about male gangsters, but Hollywood has a long list of female gangsters as well. Yes, we’re talking about a female now (finally!)! Bonnie Parker, portrayed by Faye Dunaway, is one of the best dressed gangsters in the film fraternity. The casually dressed Bonnie also seems to be just the right partner for her equally cool gangster-partner, Clyde (portrayed by Warren Berty). It’s quite a light hearted film and definitely an enjoyable one!
2. Vincent Vega
Directed by the famous director, Quentin Tarantino, Pulp Fiction was a major critical as well as commercial success with the actor John Travolta (who portrayed Vega onscreen) being nominated for the Academy Awards for the best actor. The film is a masterpiece and is divided in different parts—where the dresses change accordingly! Our favorite part is the famous “dance scene” where Vincent Vega shakes his leg with Mia Wallace (Uma Thurman)—the dark suit-white shirt combination with a ponytail and side locks was oh-so the winner!
1. Michael Corleone
There is no one till date to have given any competition to the—Al Pacino as Michael Corleone in The Godfather. We know Marlon Brando too features in the film as the patriarch, but somehow, Pacino cannot be second to anyone! The sharp chiseled looks with polished dark suits and wavy long hair, combined with the Pacino-charm is one of the main features of the great masterpiece-film. Surely, a must watch!
