If you are one of those people who wake up in the morning feeling as though a bus has hit you, then it is time for you to check out your sleeping pattern. Thomas Dekker said, “Sleep is that golden chain that ties health and our bodies together”.  How you function throughout the day will depend much on the way you slept the previous night. It is not just enough if you sleep, it is important that you sleep comfortably to wake up feeling refreshed.

Tossing and turning in your bed throughout the night, trying to catch the forty winks can be your worst nightmare. Not being able to sleep is not just frustrating, but it will also cause you to worry over things which are not important.

Comfortable sleep is a luxury everyone should afford to lead a healthy and stress free life. Here are 7 ways which would help you sleep comfortably through the night, so you can welcome the morning with a smile.

7. Make your bed

Keeping your bed clutter free (no, your spouse is not clutter) is very important for a goodnight’s sleep. If your bed is cluttered with mobile phone, bills, books and other such distractions, you may feel tempted to have a look at them and miss your sleeping time. Moreover, a cluttered bed does not allow you to snuggle in comfortably. Also make your bed every night before you retire for night.

6. Make the right choice

Choose the right type of mattress, sheets, pillows and blanket that give you a good feel.  The right type of mattress along with pillows that suit your size will help you sleep like a baby. Even the color of your bed will make a lot of difference to your sleep. Sheets which are bright in color or have very bold diagrams will disturb you before you fall asleep.  Find a position that allows you to fall asleep quickly, no matter how weird you look sleeping in that position.

5. Make your bedroom sleep friendly

Keep your TV, newspaper, laptop and other things anywhere but in your bedroom. A bedroom should be made sleep friendly by keeping away unnecessary noise, bright lights and distractions away.  Do not use shades of red in your bedroom, unless you are very fond of it. Also avoid use of mirrors which can create disturbing reflections. Make your bedroom sleep friendly by making necessary adjustments.

4. Just cool enough for you

Adjust temperature of your bedroom according to your requirements. Hot and humid environment can be very disturbing for your sleep. If you are sticky and sweaty, there is little chance that you will sleep comfortably for long.  It is also impossible to get sleep when you are shivering in cold. Right temperature in your bedroom is quite important for a relaxing night.

3. Stick to a sleep routine

People, who stick to sleep/wake up time and follow a sleep routine, sleep better than those who just hit the bed whenever they like. Following a routine before your bedtime will start giving your body cues that it is time for you to sleep.  Wear comfortable night clothes, drink a glass of warm milk, or have a hot water bath sometime before sleeping.  It does not matter what you do, as long as you are comfortable and it makes you sleepy. See to it that you not change your routine too often.

2. Early to bed, early to rise

You must have heard this a hundred times from your nursery teacher – Early to bed, early to rise, makes you healthy, wealthy and wise.  Do not hit the snooze button on your alarm, which will just make you go back to sleep once again. If you wake up late, you will end up feeling awake in the night. It also helps if you avoid naps during day time and stick to your sleep timings. Rise and shine early in the morning, so that you will be sleepy when night falls.

1. Watch what goes into your mouth

You sleep as well as you eat and drink. Alcohol, coffee or tea before bedtime can give you disturbing sleep. Eating heavy dinner or chocolates can also disturb your sleep. When you don’t watch what goes into your mouth after the sun sets, you may fall asleep, but you will wake up feeling tired and sleepy.  Watching your diet in the evening and following healthy eating habits will not just help you sleep well, it will also help you maintain good health.
