6. The Oldest in South Asia
Presidency University (then college) is the oldest educational institution established in South Asia that stressed more on western education. It was established in the year 1817 when it was named the Hindu College. It was known as the Mahapathshala wing of the Hindu College. In the year 1855 the name of the college was changed to Presidency College till it attained University status. The Presidency University Bill was passed in the Legislative Assembly of West Bengal in 2010, which made it a state University.
5. Eminent Bengalis Always Had Great Interest in Establishing the College
Presidency was established primarily because of the interest of Raja Ram Mohan Roy, an eminent personality in Bengal during the Bengali Renaissance. He died a sudden death, but he is remembered by everyone at the Presidency College because of what he had given to it. He even has an auditorium named after him. An annual lecture series is organized at Presidency, which is named the Derozio Memorial lecture.
