Kuch Kuch Hota Hai which released 20 years ago was an iconic film. Well, for me, that’s an understatement. Everything about this particular Karan Johar’s film defined my young life then – right from the trend-setting fashion to the romantic music. It embedded a deep sense of Indian femininity in my innocent mind then. Cut to 2018, twenty years of ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’ has given me enough moments to contemplate.
This Bollywood commercial taught us the beauty of friendship too seriously? Think again! Director Karan Johar tweeted this on the remarkable occasion of 20 years of ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’:
I can’t believe it’s been #20YearsOfKKHH ! A film that gave me love ,acceptance and a career….will always be eternally grateful to @KajolAtUN @iamsrk #rani and @BeingSalmanKhan for indulging a 25 years old boy with stars in his eyes! Thank you for all the love❤️ pic.twitter.com/xm3RGVOneI

Since Bollywood has become a classic cultural tool these days, my problem emerges from the fact that after 20 years of ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’, I realized these several sexist underlinings. Let’s see some of them:
Rahul is a sissy who couldn’t be defeated by a girl in basketball!
Well, I’m totally a Basketball fan and have been a captain myself but back then, Rahul (SRK), thought that girls can’t play Basketball! In this scene, Anjali (Kajol) screams her lungs out when Rahul tries to cheat.
Rahul can’t stand the prospect of losing to Anjali even in front of children!
Even before romanticizing Anjali in front his Anjali, Rahul challenges the saree-clad Anjali to a game of basketball. At least he should have cared about her attire!
Rahul thinks foreign-returned Tina (Rani) can’t sing spiritual bhajans!
When he couldn’t think of anything else, Rahul thinks challenging Tina to sing a classic Hindi spiritual song will belittle her. Until Tina proves that no one forgets Indian roots wherever they are.
Rahul appears like a sexist pig with every ‘Sonia’ in the college!
Rahul runs after girls who are nothing like Anjali’s sorry ‘tomboy’ ass. They are those sexy Sonias who fall in love at first sight with Rahul – self-confidence at its peak?
Rahul thinks London women aren’t homemakers!
Not just casual sexism, Rahul also thinks London women aren’t sanskaari. After challenging Tina’s ‘Indianess’, he tells Anjali that Tina is “not his type”. Because she’s a girl from London who he “can’t take home to his mother”.
Rahul can’t find one beautiful girl so he hangs around with Anjali, the uncool one.
Rahul seems disappointed in not being able to find his perfect match. Therefore, he believes in hanging out with Anjali who is neither sexy nor hot according to him.
No girl can get Rahul unless she becomes his friend first!
You hit a girl in the chest and when she swirls her glossy hair, instead of apologizing, propose her! What could be more casual than that? Well, Rahul can’t love you unless you’re his friend first!
You could win a dance with a girl just by catching her saree’s pallu!
Fuck the real deal or the piano. Rahul just imagines the entire romantic song in his head, holds Anjali’s saree’s pallu and that’s it. She’s in his arms in less than a second!
Mr Malhotra can’t stop flirting with his college teachers!
Mr Malhotra (Anupam Kher) who is the principal of the school, basically spends half his time going around checking women’s skirt lengths. But, when it comes to Mrs. Berganza, he giggles like a kid himself.
That one sexy teacher who dresses to kill!
Not just Anupam Kher, but Mrs. Berganza (Archana Puran Singh) also looks sexy and desirable all the time. She takes her class very seriously – ranging the topics from love, friendship to other ‘cool’ subjects.
Well, there’s one character we can’t forget in 20 years of ‘Kuch Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’, which is Anjali’s sexy dadi.
