Long Train Journeys can turn into a monotonous affair especially if you travel frequently. Here are 20 great tips for passing time on a long journey.
The best pastime ever is to sleep. If you’ve been working hard, catch up on sleep in your train journey. The movement of the train can act as a rocking cradle.
If not sleeping, read a good book. Try finishing a novel in your journey. It can be a fun way if you like reading.
3. Listen to Music
Listening to music on your iPod or phone or tablet or iPad or laptop or whatever can also be a good way to pass some time.
4. Talk to a Stranger
It’s a great way to get to know new people and understand people and experience life. It’s a little out of the comfort zone which is great learning experience.
5. Watch a Movie
Watch a movie on your laptop or iPad or tablet or phone or iPod or whatever.
6. Watch the Scenery
If you run out of juice then watch the scenery outside your train window. Unless it’s boring or filthy – or else you may keep reading on, there’s still more options on what you can do.
7. Play Cards
Take a deck of cards with you if you are 4 or more people. Even 2 people can play some good games. Even if you are alone you can try playing solitaire for a while.
8. Play Travel Games
Travel games are indoor games such as ludo, snakes and ladder, scrabble, chess etc. that come in travel sets. Or travel games can be those games you play while travelling like tic-tac-toe or 20 questions or something.
9. Play Mind Games
Mind games are puzzles or crosswords that you can play alone. Or you can try and play mind games with your fellow passengers.
10. Play Video Games
If you have a gameboy or phone or laptop or tablet or iPad or whatever then you can also play some video games. For a while.
11. Count The Number Of Poles You Cross
It’s for an emergency if you start getting really bored. Did you know that you can count the number of poles and calculate the speed of the train?
12. Visit Every Platform
If you are tired of sitting by now then make it a rule to get down at every station and platform, just for the fun of it.
13. Take Photographs
Take photographs while the train is moving and especially at remote platforms. It can be exciting because the train doesn’t stop for too long and you have to get a few good shots by then.
14. Make it a Game to Buy Something from Every Platform
Get down and buy some eatables or a toy or something. You can find some real gems this way.
15. Walk Up and Down the Whole Train
It’s a great exercise and a good way to pass time and see strange people doing strange things. You can’t do it if the train is too crowded though.
16. Ask the Hawkers to Tell You Their Story
The hawkers, who come and go, ask them to sit and tell you their story. Make them smile and it will bring joy to your own heart and also pass your time.
17. Write a Novel
Take the stories of the hawkers and write a novel based on them. Or write a novel based in a fantasy world. Just don’t copy game of thrones please.
18. Make a Plan to Solve the Problems of the World
If you can’t write a novel, think about the world’s problems and make a plan to solve hunger, poverty etc. Who knows you might come up with the solution that changes the world. If not at least you’ll pass your time.
19. Sing Songs
Sing songs loudly. Play antakshari with your friends. Play antakshari with strangers. By this time you’ll do anything to pass time.
20. Be Quiet
When all else fails, just sit and be quiet for a while. Quiet down your thoughts and focus on the “clickety clack of the polished wheels on the steel rails”. It’s a great way to meditate.
