Are you an early 90s kid? If yes, then it’s time for some nostalgia, guys! Yes, yes, I agree that we didn’t have such a hi-tech childhood back then with so many modern gadgets and animated series being our partners; but, nevertheless, life was pretty simple and better! We might not have innumerable channels that we’ve now, but our good ol’ Doordarshan, Star TV and Zee TV were enough to provide us with a jolly good time with our family, friends and of course, the neighbors! Let’s look at some of the TV shows that were a rage in those days—
10. Sea Hawks
One of the swashbuckling hits of the 90s, there were perhaps hardly a few people who didn’t use to watch this mega serial. While the parents watched this show for its intense story-line and acting, we used to watch it to revitalize our eyes, if you know what we mean! It was a launching pad for Madhavan, Milind Soman, Niki Walia and so many others!
Yet another serious serial in the list directed by the master director Mahesh Bhatt himself while the script was penned down by Shobha De and Vinod Ranganath. It was a serial portraying love, lust, suspicion, passion, angst and Dignity. In short, it was a quintessential Indian soap opera which was loved by all!
Shanti: Ek Aurat Ki Kahani was the serial which launched Mandira Bedi in the title role and made her a house-hold name throughout the nation. It was perhaps the first drama to be aired on the National Television and is widely considered as a classic!
From drama, let’s focus our attention on the epic drama! Mahabharat was just not a series, but a phenomenon to occur in the Indian Television. Coming from the kitty of B. R. Chopra Productions, it received so much accolades that the whole series had to be repeated twice over—and still the craze didn’t seem to subside.
Name any kid who wasn’t hooked to this series about a docile lad and India’s first super hero, Gangadhar Rao Jamnadhar Rao Deshmukh (a.k.a Shaktimaan), and you’ll be rewarded instantly! This series presented the age old war between the Good and Evil and showed how, repeatedly, Good smashes down the Evil each time, everywhere!
5. Malgudi Days
Repeated numerous times on Doordarshan, Malgudi Days came straight out of R. K. Narayan’s collection of short stories of the same name which presented simple and innocent tales about simple people living at a corner of the world, untouched by the worldly vices! It was yet another series that was loved and enjoyed by all!
4. Dekh Bhai Dekh
Aired on Doordarshan’s Metro Channel (DD2) back in the 90s, it was one of the most popular sitcoms of those days. It was a series which presented the joint Diwan family—a family comprising of 3 generations! And, what followed was an entertaining laugh riot which made every Indian go crazy in their drawing rooms!
3. Hum Paanch
This series portrayed on-screen all the possible troubles that you could ever think of when you’ve not one but 5 daughters of different outlook and mentality in your family! And, the story is fueled with the presence of two wives—one who’s living, and the other who’s a living dead!
2. Jungle Book
An animated adoption of Rudyard Kipling’s novel of the same name, Jungle Book, aired every Sunday at 10 am was a must-watch that the kids would never agree to miss! The daredevil Mowgli, the fatherly Baloo, Baghera and others for company, it was an endearing watch in not only those days, but even now!
1. Duck Tales
One of the favorite animated series among children all over the world, Duck Tales struck the chord with the Indian children when DD2 began airing it in Hindi and made it an instant favorite among all! After all, who wouldn’t be intrigued to learn about the adventure packed tours of the multi-millionaire Uncle Scrooge and his three mischievous nephews Huey, Dewy and Louie?
