Chori Chori is a musical, romantic comedy about a spoiled rich girl on the run played by Nargis, who travels with a reporter (Raj Kapoor) looking for a news scoop. The movie was an unofficial and modified remake of famous Hollywood movie, ‘It happened One Night’.
9. Jis Desh Mein Ganga Behti Hai (1960)
One of the most critically acclaimed movies of Raj Kapoor, Jis desh mein Ganga behti hai, bagged many prestigious awards at National Film Awards and Filmfare Awards. 8. Jagte Raho (1956)
The film without a lead heroine shows the trauma underwent by a man who enters an apartment in Bombay in search of water to quench his thirst. Mistaken for a thief, Raj Kapoor tries to hide in different places, watching in horror at the crimes committed by the so-called “respectable” citizens of the city, who by day, lead a life totally in contrast to what they do behind closed doors.
7. Aag (1948)
Aag was the first film produced and directed by Raj Kapoor, in addition to being the first film produced by R.K.Banner. The film also introduced one of the most famous screen pairs of Bollywood, Nargis and Raj Kapoor for the first time to the audience. Though not a great box-office hit, the movie is one of the landmark movies of Raj Kapoor.
6. Anari (1959)
Anari teamed the versatile actress Nutan along with the showman Raj Kapoor to bring out a magnificent box office hit from not so new storyline. 5. Sangam (1964)
Sangam was one of the love triangle movies, involving Raj Kapoor, Rajender Kumar and Vyjayantimala in the lead roles. The movie with heart tilting music was Raj Kapoor’s first color film, distinguished by its technicolor and epic length, running for 238 minutes. The film also started the trend of shooting Bollywood movies on foreign locales, especially for the songs.
4. Shree 420 (1955)
Though this is an amazing movie of Raj Kapoor, it is more famous and known for its song “Mera Joota Hai Japani” which was and still is popular among Bollywood music fans. The song was recently quoted in an acceptance speech at the Frankfurt Book Fair in 2006 by Bengali author Mahasweta Devi, showing how it has endeared itself to the heart of people. A great box office hit, the movie grossed over Rs.20 million in the year 1955. It was highly popular in countries including the Soviet Union, Romania and Israel.
3. Mera Naam Joker (1970)
Mera Naam Joker was one of the pet movies of Raj Kapoor where he brilliantly portrays the character of a naive clown who must make his audience laugh at the cost of his own sorrows, to earn his livelihood. Raj Kapoor invested a huge fortune and 6 years into the making of the film, which unfortunately flopped at the box office. It took sometime before people came to appreciate the movie and later it is known to have garnered critical praise from film industry and movie goers alike.
2. Barsaat (1949)
Loaded with 10 best songs, Barsaat was one of the first major hit films directed by Raj Kapoor, the success of which allowed Kapoor to buy RK Studios in 1950. The soundtrack is considered to be the best of Bollywood, and some of the websites have ranked atop, including Planet Bollywood and IMBD. The R K Studios logo is inspired from an iconic scene from this film which involved a romantic moment between Raj Kapoor and Nargis.

The epic movie has 10 songs, including the evergreen ‘Awaara hoon’ by Mukesh. Raj Kapoor plays the part of innocent, poor man which is based on the character of Charlie Chaplin’s ‘Little Tramp’, whose life is changed by the privileged lawyer and love of his life Rita (Nargis). The on screen chemistry of the lead couple was one of the reasons for the great reception of the movie in Indian sub-continent.
