Varanasi Metro Routes Finalised But No Word On The IIT-BHU Low-Cost Plan

Metro trains will soon be cruising through Varanasi. The Lucknow Metro Rail Corporation (LMRC) has already planned two stretches of approximately 30 km in total for Varanasi.

One stretch will run from Godulia to Dashashwamedha Ghat, while the other from Beniabagh to Varanasi Cantt via Court, Shivpur and Tarana.

Both underground and elevated corridors will be constructed for the smooth running of the metro. According to officials, the metro will serve around 17 lakh people daily.

The project will be handled by RITES Limited, an engineering consultancy set up by GOI. The route is expected to cover Banaras Hindu University, Mughalsarai, Sarnath and major portion of Allahabad Road.

But while this is being planned, one is reminded of IIT-BHU professor Dr. Somnath Mahendra and his design of a metro rail model.

The design – Linear Induction Motor (LIM) rail metro system – was appreciated by visiting experts from Japan, who found it suitable for an ancient and cramped city such as Varanasi.

According to Dr. Mahendra, the system involves lesser capital cost than the Delhi Metro, reduces huge energy losses and does not requires regular maintenance.

Only time will tell the kind of metro Varanasi gets to see.
