As India celebrated its 70th Independence Day on August 15, security forces battled terrorists in Uri sector of north Kashmir and in Nowhatta in Srinagar.

Two terrorists have been neutralized while a massive search operation is on to flush out any remaining hostiles in Uri which is around 70 km from Srinagar.

The terrorists were attempting to infiltrate in the sector when the security forces prevented them from advancing.

Meanwhile, in another terrorist attack, five CRPF personnel and one J&K policeman received injuries when terrorists struck their camp in Nowhatta area of downtown Srinagar.

According to reports, two or three terrorists are still in the area of operation. Exchange of gunfire is still on and the area cordoned off.

The attack happened at around 8.45 am. Nowhatta is near Srinagar’s Bakshee Stadium where Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti participated in Independence Day celebrations on Monday.

A massive search operation has been launched to flush out the terrorists.

The state was put on high alert on Independence Day with some areas in Srinagar kept under curfew. There has been a recent wave of unrest following the killing of Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani. Pakistan has been trying to take advantage of it by instigating terrorist sympathisers in the Valley.
