On Monday, Deepa Malik became India’s first woman to ever win a medal at the Paralympics. She created history with her personal best throw of 4.61m in women’s shot put, clinching the silver medal. She is a paraplegic – paralysed from the waist down. Seventeen years ago, a spinal tumour had limited her to a wheelchair, and since then, she has been unable to walk. But, her disabilities didn’t abstain her from following her dreams and today, she is India’s oldest athlete to win an Olympic medal.
