Charles de Gaulle had once said that ‘In order to become the master, the politician poses as the servant.’ Well, today’s politicians have even stopped pretending as they assert their supremacy over common people. Well, it can be put this way- there are the ‘normal politicians’ and there are those politicians who are nauseating bane to their very own fraternity! Let’s read about some of the political jerks in India.
He was the former Chief Minister of Karnataka from the Bhartiya Janata Party but following allegations of corruption against him and the events thereafter he left the BJP to form Karnataka Janata Paksha. There were allegations of his involvement in granting illegal mining licenses and land deals too. He resigned as Chief Minister in July 2011 after the Lokatyuka report on illegal mining indicted him. He was arrested in 2011 and later granted bail as all politicians tend to get after spending 23 days in jail.
He began his political career as the President of the Maharashtra Pradesh Youth Congress, a position he held from 1978 to 1980. Today he is a Member of Parliament from Pune. He was ousted from the Indian National Congress when he was charged for awarding illegal contracts to a Swiss firm for Timing-Scoring-Result (TSR) system for the 2010 Commonwealth Games. A politician, who was restrained by the Delhi High court from participating in the London Olympics Opening Ceremony, is alleged to have caused a loss of 95 crore to the exchequer.
Well he is the man at the center if the 2G Scam. He holds the baton for having been responsible for the 2G scam, probably the largest political corruption scam in modern history amounting to around 1766.45 billion. He was arrested in February 2011 along with his aides and was later released on bail after spending 15 months in jail.
He was the Chief Minister of Jharkhand from 2006 to 2008 and the only third independent legislator to have assumed the post of a Chief Minister. He is alleged to have been responsible for a scam worth over Rs. 4000 crore. From exploiting the state’s natural resources to disproportionate assets, he has been alleged to have been involved in a host of other scams. He was arrested in 2009 and is currently on bail.
He is the Nationalist Congress Party which he founded in 1999, after separating from the Indian National Congress. Sharad Pawar was named by Abdul Karim Telgi in relation to the 600 billion rupee stamp-paper scam. He was also allegedly involved in a multi-crore scam involving wheat imports apart from several shady land allotments to his family. With such corruption charges against him, it is evident why he is in this list.
At a time when the whole country as united to pray for a 23 year old girl who was brutally raped by a group of ruthless men, there were still some politicians who failed to show respect for women. Botsa Satyanarayana is an Indian politician from Andhra Pradesh who belongs to the Indian National Congress was one among those. When the 23 year old was battling for her life, he made a distasteful sexist remark branding the incident as minor and putting the blame on the girl for going out at night!
He is the former Chief Minister of Haryana, a state known to be not so women friendly. Our country has the infamous khaps who dish out ridiculous diktats against women making their lives difficult. The last thing this country needed was for a minister to support the former’s preposterous decrees. But he sure did when he supported a Khap Panchayat’s bizzare suggestion that girls should be married off early to prevent rapes.
Anybody who does politics with the sheer aim to divide and rule is a perfect fit for this list. Perhaps, these are the worst breed of politicians that there could ever be and Akbaruddin Owaisi is certainly one among those. He is an MLA of the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly and is known for his inflammatory Islamist speeches. As a country we already have a lot going against us, we certainly don’t need people like him igniting communal unrest!
He is the deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra and the nephew of Sharad Pawar. Though there have been several allegations leveled at him about corruption and misappropriation of funds but the latest controversy surrounding him in drought hit Maharashtra probably outdoes the others. In an attempt to be comical he remarked ‘If there is no water in the dam … Should we urinate into it?’ at a time when the state was reeling under sever water crisis. Well, that certainly qualifies him for this list, doesn’t it?
Well what can anybody say about this famous politician from Uttar Pradesh that has not already been said. Famous for her ostentatious display of power, she is probably known more for her birthday celebrations and statues than anything else. Taj Corridor and disproportionate asset cases are allegedly a few of the long list of her accomplishments, making her the #1 candidate in our list of biggest political jerks of India . And it is said that she also aspires to the Prime Minister of this country. Well, at least if that happens we would have more statues than any other country the world over!
