Top 10 lessons from The Godfather

Universally conceived as the greatest mob movie ever made, The Godfather is a timeless masterpiece which holds a marvelous trait of re-watch-ability. Best known for depicting in-depth opinions, pridefulness, nostalgia, pride, crime, rottenness, treachery, honor, affection and other worldly attributes, The Godfather is also famous for comprising plethora of historical dialogues. If you haven’t seen The Godfather, move ahead and imbibe it. And if you’ve seen it, you can learn overplus of lessons by enwrapping your little pea brains. Here, TopYaps is offering Top 10 lessons from The Godfather you can’t refuse!

10. Always have a plan, and believe in it:

Forget the age-old command of “If God wants us to grow, he will provide the means”, and move ahead to adapt the maxims of fast-forward thinking. One point which you should remember is that everything doesn’t happen according to your plan because there are stacks of veiled roadblocks and out of the blue potholes in your way. But, with sheer determination, when you realize that nothing is unrealistic then indeed the next stage will be yours.

9. Be loyal:

Loyalty is one of the most significant lessons which we learn from The Godfather. Indeed, it should be. When things are going to be tough then you need someone working in actions, not just in words. If you’re abortive in every walk of your life then chances are you’re lacking loyalty. Some people often say that loyalty and blind faith can be used synonymously. But here’s a point to remember that the blind faith is fanaticism which can severely affect your decisions whereas loyalty offers the chance to evaluate foreclosures of your life. Doesn’t matter the other person is wrong, because if he is wrong you’ll let him know privately but whenever you guys are in crowd, you’ve to take a stand for him.

8. Build a powerful community:

Building a powerful community strengthens your very own existence in the society. Go ahead and embrace a blooming community which is capable in bringing the changes you’re looking for. All you’ve to do is to add the word “community” in your vocabulary and to build belief for it. And then you can easily become the part of the ‘force’ which is working for your own dreams and destinations.

7. Learn from mistakes:

Apart from being a great gift of opportunity, a mistake is an essential part of self-improvement. You can’t become a perfectionist from the day one because your life is full of failures, fumbles and flops that gradually make you learn how to tackle the upcoming hurdles impeccably. And if you think that a mistake-free life defines success then you’ve to change the mode of your imagination because success is all about never making the same mistake second time.

6. Make them an offer they can’t refuse:

Well, for Don Vito Corleone this statement means “Do as I say or I’ll kill you”, but in general, this eminent quote of The Godfather motivates the next person to defeat his inactiveness and propel the action you want. This formula — if followed potently, can defuse each and every objection of the person sitting next to you.

5. Be a decision maker:

No doubt, decision-making is one of the most elusive jobs ever because here you’ve to select the wisest path from multitude of possibilities. Being a decision maker doesn’t mean that you’ll always get success in your way. The thing which matters most is that your decision-making process should be always endorsed by the eventuality and testing of plan. If you’re a fanatic follower of The Godfather then you must know that the process of decision-making is strictly a “personal business”, and you can definitely hit the right target if you know what your values are.

4. Keep emotions away:

“Fredo, you’re nothing to me now. You’re not a brother, you’re not a friend. I don’t want to know you or what you do. I don’t want to see you at the hotels; I don’t want you near my house. When you see our mother, I want to know a day in advance, so I won’t be there. You understand?” This narration of Michael Corleone is enough to transmit a message that if you’re heading a syndicate then you’ve to follow your own mannerisms. Perform silently, play calmly, and become a stone that can easily bear series of blows.

3. Keep your friends close, but your enemies closer:

If you want to keep yourself one jump ahead from your enemies then you’ve to keep them closer. If they are closer you can know all their features as well as can keep them uncertain of your purposes at the same time. You know that the next person is a potential backstabber but you can offer them a death blow while tranquillizing them into imagination that you mean no threat for them.

2. Respect your word:

“My word is my bond.” This quote specifies that you’re assuring the next person that you’ll honour your promise and it will be accomplished at any cost. It’s not a motiveless or catty phrase because once when you’ve delivered it to someone, the statement “I’m really sorry that I didn’t make it” suddenly disappears from your inner-being. Act like a man! When a man takes an oath, he’s holding his own self in his own hands — like water. And if he opens his fingers then he needn’t hope to find himself again.

1. A man who doesn’t spend time with his family can never be a real man:

Your family is the first and foremost thing which you should care more than yourself. Even Michael – A man of intransigent principles who never supposed to join the Mafia, steered the wheels of Corleones after the deadly assassination attempt made on his father. He cultivated a potent sense of “being us” because he knew that an ounce of blood is much crucial than thousands of pounds of other relationships in the world. Indeed, whenever you’ll focus on your life, the greatest bliss which you’ll experience is the happiness of your family.

  3. [...] The Godfather is arguably the greatest movie in cinematic history. You can watch it several times and will never get tired of it (Isn’t this quality enough?). Pacino was the baby boy of Marlon Brando, who later entered in the field of crime due to horrible family circumstances. Well, I am not going to make further description as I think it’ll be blasphemy to narrate this point in 4-5 lines. However, I’d like to say to readers that if you haven’t seen it yet then please go ahead and watch it. And if you’ve seen, watch it once again to imbibe the plethora of lessons which The Godfather offers. [...]

  4. Gandalf

In honest way, I can still go and watch this movie for another 50-60 times continuously, yet won’t be sufficient for me. The screenplay, cinematography, storyline and ofcourse the lessons help make The Godfather a movie you simply can’t refuse.

    @TopYaps
How about switching the point #5 (be a decision maker) to #2? I think this lesson deserves higher ranking.

  5. Gandalf, personally, I too appreciate The Godfather for its tremendous rewatchability. Not only this, a person who is remotely interested in watching movies; loves the historical saga of the utterly natural Corleones.
We’d certainly look ahead for your genuine suggestion.
