Ansari was jailed back in 2012 when he allegedly crossed into Pakistan illegally from Afghanistan.

Since his arrest, Ansari has been attacked at least thrice by inmates in Peshawar jail and his family had been pleading the government to take some action.

Looking into the case, External affairs minister Sushma Swaraj met the Ansari’s family on August 11 and assured them of all possible help that India can provide.

Meanwhile, Vikas Swarup is said to have taken up the matter with the Pakistani authorities and requested for Ansari’s release:

After meeting Swaraj, Ansari’s family expressed hope that the government will find some ways to bring their son back home safely.

Swaraj last week had also directed the Indian High Commissioner in Pakistan to seek consular access for Ansari.
