Subramaninan Swamy finally launched his much-awaited attack on Sonia Gandhi in the Rajya Sabha today. In his maiden speech, which he could not deliver previously because of Congress intervention, Swamy laid bare all the facts and figures from the judgement given by an Italian court.
He attacked the Congress citing the judgement and demanded that the CBI should question Sonia Gandhi before they knock on the doors of Manmohan Singh. Though he refrained from taking the Congress president’s name, his attacks were at her.
“On Sept 2008, the contract negotiation committee rejected IAF’s 793 arbitrarily number and fixed Rs 4877.5 crore as the deal. Then defence minister AK Antony signed on the paper. Who was the authority that overruled him? I know it was definitely not Dr Manmohan Singh.”
Swamy also shattered UPA’s charge that the NDA changed the specifications of the deal citing a previous question raised in the Parliament to AK Antony.
The question was whether the IAF in Jan 2004 had warned that altitude requirement of VVIP helicopters be kept at 6000 mtrs as an inescapable necessity.
Antony had then said that IAF had indeed said the same but despite that the altitude requirement of the VVIP choppers was brought down in 2006 (during the UPA rule) after due consultation. AgustaWestland choppers have a maximum altitude of 4500 mtrs.
Swamy added that the CBI has the right to question the person referred to in the Italian court judgement as the “driving force” behind the AgustaWestland Chopper deal. Documents with the court showed that it was Sonia Gandhi who acted as that force.
Swamy said that the UPA government manipulated the conditions to ensure that AgustaWestland will be the only contender for the deal.
“The internationally accepted standard for a chopper’s cabin height is 1.45 metres. But in this case, the cabin height specification was set at 1.80 metres. Only AgustaWestland could fulfill this condition and the rest were out,” he said. The BJP leader also alleged that while the original proposal was to buy eight choppers, the number was later raised to 12 once AgustaWestland won the contract.
Swamy also brutally countered Congress leader Ahmed Patel’s argument that the ‘AP’ in the case could be anyone.
Patel’s name figures four times in the judgement.
Such was the bashing of the Congress by Swamy that #CongressNailedinRS was at the top trending in India at the time of writing this news.
