Sumbramanian Swamy lashed out at those opposing the Uniform Civil Code (UCC). A day after the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) boycotted the Law Commission questionnaire on the triple talaq issue, the BJP MP from Rajya Sabha slammed them as hypocrites.

“The hypocrisy of the Muslim community has gone on too long and this appeasement policy in the name of secularism has now become anti-national and unproductive,” Swamy told ANI.

He stressed on the importance of having a UCC in the country citing the example of the US and other western nations.

“UCC is a government duty so how can they say that this is not good for the country, when the founding members including a large number of Muslims MPs and leaders too unanimously decided to have UCC,” he said.

He strongly criticised the triple talaq system calling it a tool for discriminating against women which should be abolished.

Swamy said that the government should implement what is stated in the directive principles.

Article 44 of the Directive Principles of State Policy encourages the State to secure a uniform civil code for all citizens, by eliminating discrepancies between various personal laws currently in force in the country.

The triple talaq system is widely seen as discriminatory. The All India Muslim Women’s Personal Law Board (AIMWPLB) has been leading the case for the abolishment of triple talaq.

Union Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu, too, criticised AIMPLB’s boycott of the questionnaire, which seeks the opinions of religious, minority and social groups on the issues ranging from triple talaq to polygamy.
