Union Railways Minister Suresh Prabhu caught everyone by surprise when on April 21 he travelled in Mumbai’s crowded local train.
According to reports, Prabhu boarded a local train from Currey Road station all the way to Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) station and even refused a seat that was offered to him.
Prabhu had gone to Currey Road for a stone laying ceremony for new foot over bridge and is believed to have boarded the train after that spontaneously. Since becoming Rail Minister, Prabhu has been doing his level best to improve the services offered by the Indian Railways. Reports say he boarded the local train so as to interact with commuters.
During his journey, Prabhu was told by daily travellers about their first-hand experience with Mumbai locals and how much trouble they face while travelling.
They complained about everything from the poor condition of the rails to filthy urinals and toilets and how crowded the trains have become.
Reports also state that a fellow commuter even invited the union minister to a wedding and requested the minister to accept it. He later even offered Prabhu his seat, but the minister politely refused and kept standing all the way till CST. After his spontaneous train journey, Prabhu alighted at the CST and left for Mantralaya.
