Is senior BJP leader Subramanian Swamy going to be the next JNU vice-Chancellor? The question came to be when late Wednesday evening several media outlets claimed that Swamy was being offered the post by the HRD Ministry and he was considering it but has put several conditions before accepting the coveted post .
Though no one, as of now, knows what those conditions are, the offer raised many eyebrows as the development took place just a day before the Union Ministry is to finalise the search-and-selection committee for appointment of the new VC.
It is believed that HRD Minister Smriti Irani spoke to Swamy and offered him the post but no official communication from the Ministry has taken place.
Swamy, in turn, has put forward a series of conditions before considering the ministry’s offer. While there has been no official statement regarding the matter, the heat it generated in the media forced Swamy to take to Twitter: While the initial tweet did confirm that he was approached, even though not formally, the reply to many of the tweets in response showed that Swamy may not be too keen about the offer.
S K Sopory is the current VC of JNU and is set to retire in January next year.
