Hittng out directly at Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Subramanian Swamy said he will be a better finance minister than Jaitley.

Swamy, whose antagonism for Jaitley is known, said “I am an economist. He is a lawyer. How can he be better than me?”

He replied to a query whether he’ll make a better finance minister than Jaitley at the India Today Mind Rocks Summit.

Swamy has been a vocal critic of former RBI governor Raghuram Rajan whose decision to return to academia and not accept a second term may have been firmed up after Swamy’s personal attacks on him. Swamy has attacked Rajan saying he had wrecked the economy with his interest rate policy and inflation management and then said that the RBI chief was not fully mentally Indian.

Swamy’s reply came following All India Majlis Ittehadul Muslimeen leader Asaduddin Owaisi’s comment that inflation would have been in check had Dr. Swamy been the Finance Minister.

“There has been a fight between southern Brahmins and northern Brahmins for long,” Swamy later quipped. When asked whether BJP has imposed a gag on him, Swamy took again a jibe at Jaitley, saying, “There is no gag order on me. Your problem is that you talk to Jaitley a lot.”
