While Indians in Australia celebrated 9-year-old Spelling Bee twins Harshit and Harshita’s talent
a week back, BBC’s ‘University Challenge’ has attracted a lot of unwanted attention for Indian-origin student Kaamil Shah.
Early this week, Shah participated in the show which is known to have serious contestants who wear mostly conservative clothes like pullovers, shirts and dresses buttoned up to the neck etcetera. While, rest of the contestants stuck to the dress code, Shah, who was representing Kings College, not only didn’t turn up in anything conservative, but rather went to the other extreme by wearing a biker’s leather vest with a chunky silver chain and unshaven chest.
The look was not missed by many with the micro-blogging site Twitter soon catching on with hash tag #vestgate sending Twitter into a meltdown.
While Shah and his Kings College team went on to lose to competition to rival Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge, Shah look sent Twitterati’s into a frenzy with many marveling at his look and others outright trolling with various memes. While the #vestgate trend started making the news, many also caught on to other fashion disasters from that night. Shah, later spoke to BBC
and said :
“I didn’t clock that the vest was going to be that outrageous”
He also termed typical outfits worn by contestants as “boring.”
