Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, who is popularly referred as ‘Sri Sri’ or ‘Guruji’ is an Indian spiritual leader with a huge number of believers. The leader who calls himself an ambassador of peace was at the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) for an event. In that event, Sri Sri had a question-answer session with students while giving his speech. Out of all the things that he said during the event, his comment on homosexuality has got a lot of attention.

According to Indian Express, while answering to a student on how he should face the ill-treatment given to him by his family and people of his age over his sexual orientation, he said:

“You treat yourself better, doesn’t matter how others treat you. You don’t think you are sick or something’s wrong with you. If you stand up, nobody can insult you. But if you feel weak and meek, and if you feel bad about yourself, nobody can make you feel better.
This is your tendency now. Just acknowledge it and accept it, and know that this tendency is not a permanent thing. It may change. I’ve seen many men who were gay, later on, turn into heterosexuals, and there are those who are normal — what are called straight people — end up being gay later in life.”

Sri Sri’s remark calling homosexuality a “tendency which is not permanent” raised many eyebrows and it was obvious for the remark to face a backlash. One of the first few who reacted to Sri Sri’s statement was Sonam Kapoor.

The ‘Prem Ratan Dhan Payo’ actress slammed the Godman and in a series of tweets expressed her displeasure with his beliefs on homosexuality.

Soon Alia Bhatt joined her team and tweeted:

Devdutt Pattanaik, whom Sonam mentioned in her tweet claiming that he has better knowledge of Hinduism and culture also expressed his views saying,

Sonam, Alia and whosoever said against the statement that Sri Sri gave on homosexuality got slammed by his followers.

Amidst all the trolls who lashed out at the celebs for slamming Sri Sri, there was this woman who explained exactly what the spiritual leader said as she was present at the event.

The explanation by Shilpi Tewari sounds fair enough. It appears that a wrong choice of word or a few spiced up headlines by leading media portals have created this misunderstanding. Looking at the past statements by Sri Sri on homosexuality it is clear that he has never opposed it or called it abnormal. Just the interpretation of his words went wrong and created the controversy.
