To inspire children and help them achieve more in life, Jharkhand government has decided to add chapters about sports icons from the state in the textbooks.

The textbooks of Jharkhand Council of Education Research and Training (JCERT) will include  biographies of India ODI skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni, ace archer Deepika Kumari, hockey players Asunta Lakra and late Jaipal Singh Munda.

“Including Dhoni’s biography in school syllabus is a big reward for him and our family,” said Dhoni’s brother-in-law, Gautam Gupta.

The books will be available for the new session and will be distributed among government school students. Jharkhand has 45,680 state-run schools which have 52.50 lakh children enrolled in them.

Though M S Dhoni is a popular sports personality, Asunta Lakra was the former captain of Indian women’s hockey team.

She hails from a village in Simdega district of Jharkhand. She rose to glorious heights and has played Jr. World Cup in 2005, Sr. World Cup, Commonwealth Games twice, and participated in the Asia Cup twice.

Recently, Hockey India started a new national award of Rs 10 lakh in the name of Asunta . It will be given to the most promising player.

She is an ace archer ranked at World No 5. She was earlier at world number one position. She has won gold in 2010 Commonwealth Games and has been also conferred Arjuna Award by President Pranab Mukherjee in 2012.

Deepika’s father said he was proud of his daughter when he was told that she has found a place in school text books at such an early age.

Under his captaincy, the Indian team played 17 matches in the League Stage of which 16 were won and one drawn. Even Major Dhyanchand had played under his captaincy.

Regarding the decision to include biographies of these sports icons, the state HRD minister Neera Yadav, said:

“Dhoni, Deepika, Asunta and legendary late Jaipal Singh are our state’s iconic personalities. Their exploits in the field are unmatched. We are privileged and proud to teach their biographies to our children. Also, children inclined to sports have a habit of emulating their icons.”

Interestingly, even students from the state are excited to read about their favorite sports personality.

Class 4th student Aishwarya Sakshim, a fan of Dhoni, said, “I am eagerly waiting for the text book to read his biography.”
