Amid growing outrage over the controversial event in Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), India’s ODI captain MS Dhoni said that it is the armed forces which ensure that we stay in a position to keep debating over freedom of speech.

Dhoni, who has been conferred with an honorary rank of Lieutenant Colonel by the Indian Army, sent out a series of tweets on February 21, in which he said:

Other sports stars have also expressed their opinion on the same issue.

Cricketer Shikhar Dhawan voiced his opinion on unfurling of the Indian flag in universities.

He said:

“My take is simple. It (flag) should be unfurled at the Universities. It (flag) is the pride of the nation. The more the merrier I would say. Though you have touched upon a sensitive topic, one should never say anything ill about the country you live in.”

Indian batsman Gautam Gambhir earlier this week asked politicians not to use the JNU issue for their own advantages and expressed his shock over the matter. He had tweeted:

Few days before that, wrestler Yogeshwar Dutt had posted a heart wrenching poem on Facebook, expressing his thoughts on Kashmir and Afzal Guru.

Boxer Vijender Singh had also come forward and conceded that there is no way India would give up Kashmir as its territory.

Over the past few months, many universities across India have become the hub of controversies for one reason or the other, and the latest in the list are JNU, Hyderabad University, and Jadhavpur University.

Though the reason for turmoil in all the above stated universities have been far and wide, they have now become a political hub with politicians milking the issues for their own benefits.
