According to an Indian Express report, Congress president Sonia Gandhi is likely to quit politics post 2017’s UP and Punjab election and clear way for son Rahul Gandhi to become INC president.
The report says that Sonia will soon resign from her position as the party chief, but the step would not take place before 2017’s Assembly elections in Punjab and Uttar Pradesh.
“She (Sonia) is most likely to step down after the election. She is not in favour of completing the full tenure [of her extended 1-year term as party president].”
The biggest reason for Sonia to quit politics is stated to be her health as she has not been keeping well for many months now.
The report also claims that Sonia wanted to step down much earlier from her position but has not able to do so as many from the party want her to continue till elections in the two crucial states are over.
The state of Punjab and Uttar Pradesh will go to polls between February and March once the Union Budget had been presented in the Parliament.
