An FIR has been registered by Delhi Police against Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Somnath Bharati on the basis of his wife Lipika Mitra’s complaint of domestic violence.
As reported by Zee News
, Joint Commissioner of Police (South-West), Dependra Pathak, said:
“The FIR was registered last evening at Dwarka North police station under Sections 307 (attempt to murder) and 498(a)(cruelty towards partner in marriage) and 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) of IPC.”
According to police sources, the charges are non-bailable, not ruling out an arrest.
The former Delhi law minister has been accused by his wife of prolonged domestic violence. She had approached the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) with her complaint on June 10, 2015.
She alleged that she was suffering due to extreme physical, mental and verbal harassment from Bharti since their marriage in 2010. She also claimed
that Bharati “let the dogs lose at me and my child”.
After four attempts of mediation between Bharati and his wife failed to bear any result, Lipika insisted that the police now take action against him.
Lipika said that she was unaware about the FIR against Bharati. She says:
“I have not yet heard from police and am not aware that an FIR has been filed on the basis of my complaint.”
A court had, on July 7, dismissed the anticipatory bail plea of the MLA, accused of harassing his wife, saying his application was premature as there was no FIR lodged against him. The ruling party in Delhi alleges
it is being targeted by the Delhi Police, which reports to the Center.
