Mandira Bedi was a relatively familiar face (already) in Indian television when she bagged the role of a cricket presenter along with co-host Charu Sharma in the ICC World Cup Cricket 2003. A fresh face, good knowledge of cricket and a strong personality made her stand out among cricket legends. She became an overnight sensation. She was the first woman in India to host a cricket show which until then had been widely dominated by male individuals. She also paved the way for other female hosts down the years to host other cricket and sports shows. A personality on her own, she was also named the brand ambassador
of the women’s cricket team in India. Here are six such reasons why she is a great fit for sports TV shows:
6. It’ll be a welcome change – there’re so many men!
She was instrumental in bringing about a change in the contemporary cricket hosting scenario on TV. It was a male dominated arena where India had never seen a woman talking about sports with stalwarts in the game. As a host, she was at par with the legends of cricket!
Being a woman was a difference itself on one hand. But what sealed the deal was the portrait of a beautiful, sari-clad woman, outside sports, glamorous, yet able to talk about a male-dominated game in a male-dominated space. No wonder she brought a breath of fresh air!
5. She understands cricket – she can do well as a host
You cannot fit into any show without apt knowledge of the same. And when it involves sports, it demands a good and clear idea about the game!
She is well versed in cricket terminology
and sports in general which is why she does not look out of place – being a non-player – amidst sportsmen.
4. She is different (in a good way) – Light and Entertaining to be precise
Since she does not actively participate in any game as such, her ways of hosting are different from the rest.
She does not only talk about the intricacies in the game – involving serious discussions – but is light humoured and a fresh change hence. She did bring a lot of glamour to the show, which was one of the many reasons as to why many people watched post-match shows which were based on match-analysis! Bedi is not only a pretty face but one who based her discussions on matches yet having a not-so-serious feel about it!
3. She’s got a strong personality!
She has a strong and distinct personality which makes her presence felt within a group of professionals. She speaks in a clear, dignified tone making herself understood to all listeners and viewers.
For a host of a sports show one needs to be impartial to deliver the right opinion about the game. She fits the bill completely in this respect, since a strong personality like hers can easily grab the attention of the viewer for a great length of time irrespective of being impartial.
2. Active in sporting activities
Apart from hosting sports shows she is also famous for being named as the brand ambassador of the women’s cricket team
in India for the years 2004 and 2005 and she was instrumental in getting them a few sponsorship deals.
She also starred in a film named Meerabai Not Out
, a cricket based feature film produced by PNC and Sony Pictures which released in September 2008. Her persona outside the shows, as an active member in the advancement of sports, makes her a personality to reckon with. She along with her World Cup host Charu Sharma is a regular at many cricket clubs to promote the game.
1. Her experience counts!
As soon as she started hosting sports shows on TV she was flooded with more such offers and we did get to see a lot of her on various other occasions!
Her pleasing personality immediately attracts our complete attention to the show. With an experience of hosting three World Cups, two Champions Trophies, the IPL and most sports-based shows she is the most loved and most watched TV host of any sports show! The rest of the hosts surely come after her!
