With so much hue and cry being made over the use of pellet guns, the government has decided to use plastic bullets to control unruly crowds in the valley.

Non-penetrative plastic bullets will be used to control mobs and stone-pelters in Jammu and Kashmir while pellet guns will continue to remain as the last resort in the non-lethal category.

The plastic bullets can be fired from INSAS rifles. Apart from these bullets, the forces use PAVA shells and dye marker grenade which causes sensory trouble to the target. PAVA (Pelargonic Acid Vanillyl Amide) is a chilly-based ammunition which is non-lethal and immobilizes the target temporarily. Another new entrant in the list of non-lethal use is Oloeoresin which is a semi-solid extract in a solution with spicy gel. Oloeoresin can be put in grenade cases to tackle the mob.

Last month, the apex court had asked the government to come up with alternatives to pellet guns to minimize the use of pellet guns which can cause severe injuries.
