Sania Mirza Gave An Applause-worthy Answer To Rajdeep Sardesai’s Sexist Statement

Tennis champ Sania Mirza has achieved immense success. She has made India proud many a times. Following her dreams, she has achieved a lot of respect. After marrying Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Malik many thought that she will take retirement soon but Sania had another plans. There was much left to achieve.

For society, if a girl gets married, her house and motherhood should become her foremost concerns and that’s what made Rajdeep Sardesai ask Sania Mirza this while taking her interview:

“You don’t talk about retirement, about raising a family, about motherhood, what’s life beyond tennis is going to be…”

To which Sania intelligently replied:

You don’t think I’m settled? …  You sound disappointed that I’m not choosing motherhood over being number one in the world at this point of time. But I’ll answer your question anyway; that’s the question I face all the time as a woman, that all women have to face – the first is marriage and then it’s motherhood. Unfortunately that’s when we’re settled, and no matter how many Wimbledons we win or number ones in the world we become, we don’t become settled. But eventually it will happen, not right now. And when it does happen I’ll be the first one to tell everybody when I plan to do that.

After such a befitting response, Rajdeep himself apologized to her on national TV:

“I must apologize, I framed that question very badly. I promise you, you’re right, I would never ask this question to a male athlete…”

Sania truly is an inspiration for all those who choose marriage over their careers. Women should not sacrifice or compromise with their dreams. They should keep their goals and ambitions above everything on their priority lists.

Marriage, house, and kids is not everything. Self satisfaction is what a person requires and you get that immense satisfaction when you achieve your dreams. So just go and get them all, no matter what society says!

Rajdeep’s apology impressed Sania a lot and made her say:

“I’m so glad. You’re the first journalist to apologize to me on national television.”

A straight forward response from Sania changed not only Rajdeep’s mindset whereas it might have changed many people’s perspective. She has proved that a woman can do anything if she wants to!
