While politicians are busy playing their favourite game over hundreds of desperate farmers committing suicide, citizens from all walks of life are coming out to help the farmers in every way they can.

Doing her bit for the crisis, a young girl in Maharashtra on Sunday made a big gesture and donated whatever was in her piggy bank to aid the farmers of Maharashtra.

Rashika Joshi donated the contents of her piggy bank to the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund. She then went on to ask the Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis that her contribution should be used for farmers who were hit by drought.

Talking about his daughter’s huge gesture, Rashika’s father Manoj Joshi spoke to Press Trust of India and said:

“Rashika is a big fan of Bollywood actor Aamir Khan. After she saw the actor’s pictures with the Chief Minister, she asked me what was the actor doing with him. I explained to her that he (Aamir) is giving a cheque to the Chief Minister for his relief fund which would help farmers who lost their crops due to the ongoing drought.”

Hearing about the plight of the drought affected farmers, Rashika decided to do her bit. As her father was out of town neighbours took Rashika to meet the CM and get the little girl’s wishes fulfilled.

The Maharashtra Chief Minister, touched by her gesture, later tweeted his thanks and said:

This is third year in a row that the Marathwada region of Maharashtra is facing drought, and severity of the situation can be gauged from the fact that nearly 3000 farmers have committed suicide in the last three years, with nearly 700 dying this year alone.

Bollywood actors Akshay Kumar and Nana Patekar, too, have donated huge sums for the welfare of the farmers. The Maharashtra government has yet to officially declare a drought for the state because the official date for submitting the report was September 15.
