Over the past few years, India has begun to get its head around the idea of the transgender community and, after years of being relegated to the margins, some rather promising steps have been taken to finally welcome trans people into mainstream society. From trans candidates being selected in the police force in one or two states, to a taxi service run by trans women, to a music group, transgendered people are finally getting their due, as far as living a life of dignity is concerned.
The latest on this front is that the Ministry of Railways, in accordance with a 2014 court ruling, has announced that its new reservation forms will have a column for the Third Gender.
Acceptance is a difficult thing to come by. Especially for a people as misunderstood as the trans community. This is a great move by the Ministry of Railways. Way to take a step in the right direction. Kudos!
