To save itself from another political debacle, Congress may project Rahul Gandhi as the chief ministerial candidate in the upcoming Uttar Pradesh assembly elections.
Sources told India Today
that party’s poll strategist Prashant Kishor made the suggestion. However, if Rahul Gandhi doesn’t agree to it, then Priyanka Gandhi will be the next choice.
According to him, the party can come back to power only if it pitches Rahul Gandhi or Priyanka Gandhi Vadra in the electoral battle.
Sources told DNA
that Rahul Gandhi has already seen Kishor’s presentation and has asked for a few days time to decide. Kishore has earlier helped Narendra Modi-led NDA to win 2014 Lok Sabha election. He also helped Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar win the state elections.
Though it is no confirmed yet, partymen are already excited about the idea. Senior party leader and MP Pramod Tiwari said:
“It’s ultimately a matter of personal choice for Priyanka ji or Rahul ji, and the decision has to be taken by the party high command. But one thing is sure, if either of them is projected as the CM candidate in UP, it would bring about a tsunami in UP politics and all parties will be completely washed out.”
Congress party tally has remained in the 20s in recent assembly elections, a measly portion of the 403-strong UP Assembly.
