Pakistani social media sensation Qandeel Baloch has been shot dead by her own brother, the police said.

The Multan police said that her brother strangled her because she was not willing to remove her Facebook posts and videos.

According to Dawn, her brother had been reportedly threatening her for the same.

“Baloch was killed by her brother over honour in Muzaffarabad’s Green Town area,” a cop told Pakistani daily The Express Tribune.

Born Fauzia Azeem, Qandeel Baloch had become an internet celebrity following her antics that were both ridiculed and appreciated.

She was recently in the news for her selfie with a cleric Mufti Qawi, a member of the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee. Following the controversy that the selfie generated, Qawi was removed from his post.

The 25-year-old model hailed from the tribal area of Shah Sadar Din of District Dera Ghazi Khan in south Punjab.

She had previously informed the Interior Ministry of threat to her life. The Pakistani government did not react to her plea.

Knowing that the government will not give her security, she had told The Express Tribune that she was “not feeling secure here so decided to move abroad with parents after Eidul Fitr”.

In February 2016, she had posted a video insulting Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi by calling him a “chai-wallah”.

Condemning her killing, tributes poured in on social media:
