In an incident that highlights police apathy in India, a martyr’s mother was asked to pay a bribe in order get her son’s stolen medals back.

The incident took place in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, where family members of late Captain Devashish Sharma found that their son’s Kirti Chakra and Virata Chakra medals were stolen in a recent robbery.

They immediately informed the police and lodged a FIR to get the robbery investigated.

But according to Captain Devashish’s mother Nirmala Devi Sharma,  instead of helping the family, the police asked them for a “bribe” to investigate the matter or drop the case altogether.

The family was left appalled by police’s behavior and didn’t know what to do.

“My son won’t come back, at least return his honour.” – Nirmala Devi Sharma, Mother of Captain Sharma.

It was at that time that media house CNN-Network 18 took up the matter and broadcasted her plight on their news channel.

Soon after the appalling incident was flagged off by the media, Madhya Pradesh Home Minister Bhupendra Singh immediately took up the matter up and visited Captain Sharma’s house.

There he assured the family that their case would be a investigated and police would look into the stolen medals case.

Madhya Pradesh CM meanwhile has said that the guilty officials would be suspended.

The police are yet to give any update on the matter.

Captain Sharma was killed during Operation Rakshak against Pakistan back in 1994. He at that time was deployed with the 26 Punjab Regiment and was just 25 years old.
