PM Narendra Modi To Set Up Task Force Focusing On Next Three Olympic Games

Looking at India’s dismal performance at recently concluded Rio Olympics, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on August 26 announced that the government would soon be setting up a Task Force so as to prepare a comprehensive action plan for “effective participation” for next three Olympic Games.

The move is aimed at boosting India’s medal chances in Olympic Games — 2020, 2024 and 2028.

The announcement was made at a meeting of the Union Council of Ministers where Prime Minister reviewed performances of various ministries based on last two parliamentary budgets.

According to reports, PMO has also asked the Sports Ministry for a detailed report on why India’s performance was disappointing at the Rio Games and asked them to submit the same by the end of September.

The Olympic Task Force would be set up in the next three days and prepare the overall strategy for sports facilities, training procedures, selection process and other related matters.

At Rio, India was only able to secure two medals (a silver and a bronze) and had finished fourth in few other events. Before the Games, the ministry had projected that India would win around 10-14 medals.
