Union minister Arun Jaitley said it is public discourse at its lowest ever. Jaitley, a former Delhi University student, also shared memories of the prime minister coming to Delhi for his exams against the backdrop of the 1975-77 Emergency imposed by the Congress government at the time.

He also hit out at AAP, saying several of its leaders are being prosecuted and investigated over fake degrees.

Hours later, Mr Kejriwal tweeted that records at the Delhi University had been “sealed”.

“The name on mark-sheet is Narendra Kumar Damodar Das Modi, whereas on the degree it is Narendra Damodar Das Modi. Also the marksheet shows 1977, the degree was issued in 1978. How is that possible?” said the party’s Ashutosh.

He said that Modi’s Bachelor’s mark sheet is of year 1977, and the graduating year shown on the certificate was 1978.

AAP alleged that the only “Narendra Modi” who graduated from Delhi University in 1978 was “Narendra Mahavir Modi” from Rajasthan’s Alwar.

Kejriwal has asked about the prime minister’s education last month, and the Central Information Commission directed the Delhi and Gujarat Universities to provide details. The Gujarat University said Mr Modi did complete his MA (Master of Arts) and scored 62.3 per cent as an external student. The Delhi University has not given any details till now.
