Former Lok Sabha Speaker PA Sangma Passes Away

Purno Agitok Sangma, who was the Lok Sabha speaker from 1996 to 1998, passed away today due to illness.

According to reports, he had a heart attack at his residence in Delhi. He was 68.

As a mark of respect, Lok Sabha was adjourned for the day. Hailing him as ‘very popular mass leader’, Lok Sabha speaker Sumitra Mahajan said:

“A man of masses, Sangma strove relentlessly for the amelioration of the marginalised sections. He knew how to run the House with a smile and I learnt this from him.”


Sangma, who co-founded Nationalist Congress Party, was the chief minister of Meghalaya from 1988 to 1990.

He also unsuccessfully contested presidential elections against Pranab Mukherjee.
