Suresh Prabhu Agrees With Niti Aayog; Wants Railway Budget To Be Scrapped

Railway minister Suresh Prabhu has written a letter to Finance minister Arun Jaitley to end the 92-year-old practice of having a separate railway budget.

Sources told PTI that the letter was sent in June and the reply is awaited.

Prabhu also suggested to merge railway budget with the general budget.

If the budgets are merged, then the entire financial burden will be transferred to the finance ministry. At present, Railways is facing  a loss of Rs.34,000 crore in passenger segment and has an accumulated burden of Rs.4,83,511 crore.

The move came after recommendation about the same by Niti Aayog. PMO sought a reply from the Railways and a decision is yet to be taken by the Centre.
