Inspired by Bhutan, Madhya Pradesh government has announced India’s first ever ‘happiness department’, or ‘Anand Vibhag’.
The proposal for the same was mooted by Chief Minister Shivraj Chouhan in April. Public Relations Minister Narottam Mishra said, “It is a first historic decision by any Indian state. We are looking at spiritual happiness and happiness through knowledge in accordance with Indian philosophy to bring happiness among the people of the state.”
The department will work alongside women, health, and sports department. It will carry out regular research and strategise ways to increase the level of happiness.
The chief minister is likely to head the department. The new branch will work under a committee headed by a chairman.
The chief minister had earlier said that the purpose for such a department was to ensure happiness amongst citizens and to stop people from taking extreme steps like suicide.
