4. The Silence of the Lambs (1991)
Starling, an FBI recruit in training, interviews a former psychiatrist and cannibalistic serial killer – Hannibal Lecter. The film became a phenomenon just like the book. It went onto win 5 Academy Awards.
5. Fargo (1996)
A 7-month pregnant police chief investigating homicides is one of the 100 greatest American Movies of all times.
6. G. I. Jane (1997)
The story of a woman proving herself as strong as her male counterparts in the US Navy’s Special Warfare Group and emerging out on top is a very inspirational film.
7. Elizabeth (1998)
The story of a tender and loving girl, who turned into a ruthless dictator to usher in England’s Golden Age is a period film. Cate Blanchett, for her role as Elizabeth, won 2 Best Actress awards.
8. Erin Brockovich (2000)
This film is based on the true story of a woman fighting a giant energy corporation that was emitting carcinogens into water, which was spreading cancer in a downstream town. Julia Roberts as the spirited woman won the Best Actress award for the role.
9. Iron Jawed Angels (2004)
It is the story of America’s feminist non-violent movement that fought for women being granted the right to vote. The film won 4 awards in different categories.
10. Million Dollar Baby (2004)
The film is a story of a small town woman, who makes it big in boxing. Pursuing her passion, despite being overage, she dies; the movie won 4 Academy Awards.
11. North Country (2005)
A woman’s fight against sexual harassment in coal mines was based on a true story that ultimately led to changes in sexual harassment laws and became the basis for having a sexual harassment policy at workplaces.
12. Flight Plan
The film is a story of a mother searching for her lost daughter on board an aircraft. She does find her daughter and in the process uncovers a plan for the ransom and bombing of the aircraft.
13. A Mighty Heart (2007)
The film is about a Wall Street Journal reporter’s wife, searching for her husband who was kidnapped by terrorists in Pakistan. To her horror, her search ends in finding out that he had been killed by being beheaded.
14. Changeling (2008)
A touching story of a mother whose child had been kidnapped and then returned. On learning that the child who returned is not her child, the woman’s dilemma of fighting authorities to prove that her child is still missing made for a great film.
15. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011)
The film is about a genius woman. The anti-hero woman, a master at research and an expert at hacking when teamed with a journalist to unearth a scam makes for a good film.
16. The Hunger Games (2012)
The film captures a story about a girl playing an extremely risky game of survival, while defying an oppressive environment to come out alive. Jennifer Lawrence as ‘Katniss Everdeen’ plays a memorable role in the film.
17. Still Alice (2014)
The film is about a brilliant woman, who is inflicted Alzheimer’s disease, but is still able to stand her ground. Julianne Moore won 5 awards for Best Actress.
