In a bizarre incident, a Muslim man from Sonitpur district of Assam gave ‘Talaq’ (divorce) to his wife because she voted for BJP in this year state assembly elections.

The story is doing round in regional newspapers of Assam.

It is reported that the wife, Dilwara Begum, defied the village’s elders diktat to vote for Congress.

She voted for BJP candidate Pramod Borathakur during the first phase polling in Assam.

The husband, Ainuddin, got angry at this and announced Talaq to his wife of ten years.

The incident is seen as the evidence of polarisation of votes between Hindus and Muslims in Assam polls. The Muslim community want Congress in power while the other prefer BJP.

This year, Assam witnessed the highest ever polling percentage – 84.72 per cent. Around 70 per cent voters turnout in the first phase while 82.01 per cent voting was register for the second and final phase. The results will be declared on May 19.
