Lighting has killed at least 55 people in Bihar and left many injured over the past two days. The toll is expected to rise.
According to Disaster Management Committee official, in Patna and Rohtas alone, 16 people were injured by the lightning. Five people including a minor student were killed when they were returning home.
As monsoon hit Bihar, lightning strikes are relatively common but, the this time’s toll is particularly high. Victims’ families would get compensation for death in natural calamity.
In the neighbouring state of Uttar Pradesh, authorities said 20 people were killed over two days.
The MeT department has forecast rains or thundershowers at many places in western UP and a few places in eastern UP.
According to the recent National Crime Records Bureau data
, more than 2,500 people were killed by lightning in India in 2014.
