In an ironic situation, Jawaharlal Nehru University Student Union (JNUSU) president Kanhaiya Kumar, who was sent to jail for 14 days
has been kept in the same cell as that of Afzal Guru.
Kanhaiya, who is facing sedition charges has also been kept under suicide watch. He is being kept in jail number 3 of Tihar and would be kept in isolation for these 14 days as authorities don’t want to take any chances.
Looking at the gravity of the situation, a 12-member quick-reaction team has also been deployed to the jail so they can keep a 24-hour watch around the cell.
It is being said that 50 policemen surrounded Kumar to the jail, when he was brought in at 8:15 pm on February 17 night.
He was then registered as an inmate in Tihar and and went under a medical test.
He has now been placed in ward number 4 of the jail so as to ensure proximity to the jail hospital in case of an emergency.
Speaking on the arrangement, a jail official said:
“One of the cells close to the jail entrance has been vacated and reserved for him. He will be kept under multi-layered security and only Delhi Prison officials or staff will be allowed near his cell. His food will be checked as a precautionary measure.”
Security outside the jail has also been intensified, but Kumar still fears that his life is under threat and has asked the Supreme Court to intervene.

On February 18, Kumar even sent a plea to the apex court requesting them for bail and asking them to take up the case as soon as possible.
The court in turn has replied that his plea would be taken up on February 19.
