When Kalki Koechlin first showed up on the Bollywood scene in ‘Dev D’, most people thought she was going to be the newest flavor of the month and then be forgotten, like so many starlets before her. Meh! They were wrong!
As it turns out, this girl has got staying power. Granted that her marriage to a famous filmmaker must’ve helped her case, but you’ve gotta hand it to her, she’s made some pretty smart decisions on the movie front, too. Her performance in ‘Dev D’, and ‘Waiting’ was very good, and in ‘Margarita with a Straw’ she raised the bar to a whole ‘nother level, and bagged a National Film Award to boot.
Known as much for her stance on gender equality as for her acting skills, Kalki is going to be performing a theatrical monologue called ‘Wo-manologue’ at a function being organized by the Young FICCI Ladies Organisation (YFLO) at Federation House on September 12.
Trupti Gupta, Chairperson of YFLO, said,
She has spoken out against child sexual abuse and has lent her support to various social campaigns working in the field of women’s rights and the girl child. In this regard, she has written and performed an intense piece about the truths of womanhood — an ode to women bound by patriarchy.
During her ‘Womanologue’ at the YFLO function she will be talking about feminism, gender war, society, men, girl child and women’s empowerment and day-to-day problems faced by women.
It’s nice to see celebrities take the time to talk about the stuff that matters. This new breed of actresses is doing a rather decent job of it, what with Richa Chadha talking about the harsh truths behind the limelight and Kalki talking about relevant things like gender equality, women’s rights, and child sexual abuse and such like.
It’s about time! And more power to them!
